Whilst tax can feel complicated, it's going to feel even more overwhelming if you try to figure it out all by yourself.
If you need support, there are a few places you can turn to:
If you already have an accountant, speak to them about what changes are likely to be required and they will support you through the process. Some accountants can recommend software too, and some provide licences as part of their subscription.
If you do not work with an accountant yet, consider finding a freelance-friendly accountant who might give you initial advice before you sign up. You can find accountants via Unbiased.
Your accountant can support you, but the responsibility still falls to you to keep accurate digital records, provide them on time, and stick to quarterly deadlines.
HMRC's phone helpline is helpful, but can get busy around key dates (close to 31 January or 5 April). Call 0300 200 3310 for self-assessment enquiries, or find other ways to contact HMRC.
HMRC's official pages are fairly easy to understand, and provide a good starting point:
Fellow freelancers are often generous with practical advice about software and accountants. Tax rules are complex though, so treat community tips as a starting point and get professional advice where you need certainty.
There are also a number of really helpful guides from platforms who specialist in taxes, accounting and supporting freelancers. See the bottom of this page for some of our favourites.
